Pain in your jaw isn’t something you have to live with. At Berkeley Hills Dentistry, we have been treating temporomandibular joint disorder almost as long as we’ve been practicing — since 1926.
What is TMD/TMJ Therapy
The disorder (TMD) is caused by a dislocation of the joint (TMJ) that connects your jaw to the base of your skull. The TMJ’s connection to the skull exists directly in front of the ear, and the joint is also the hinge that opens and closes your mouth. And like anywhere else in the body, the TMJ can become inflamed over time and cause pain to shoot throughout your face. TMD can also be caused by the grinding or clenching of teeth, which puts excess stress on the joint.
Signs of TMD
TMD can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because many of the symptoms are not unique to the disorder. So, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to schedule an appointment with our dental office to see if you are suffering from TMD:
- A popping or clicking sound in your jaw when you open your mouth
- Pain when yawning, chewing or opening your mouth wide
- Headaches, specifically those behind the eyes or in front of the ears
- A change in the way your teeth fit together
How is TMD Treated?
Our dentists can walk you through all of your treatment options, but commonly he’ll be looking to correct some of the behaviors that may be causing pain. If you’re clenching or grinding your teeth, a mouthguard may be suggested or another device might be prescribed to keep you from grinding. Anti-inflammatory medication may be given, too, and our doctors might share some relaxation techniques to help control your stress levels and tension specifically in your jaw. As a last resort, surgery is also an option. For TMD treatment in Berkeley, CA give our office a call.
